WATCH: Scott Drew loses mind on technical foul, ESPN analyst agrees
Baylor basketball coach Scott Drew couldn’t contain his frustration after a missed call Saturday against Kansas, resulting in a technical foul. Drew was seen screaming in the face of a referee after he wanted a reach in foul against the Jayhawks.
Instead, a charge was called on Bears wing Matthew Mayer, resulting in Drew’s explosion.
At the time of the technical foul, the Bears were down 20 points to the Jayhawks early in the second half. It’s possible that Drew’s show of emotion was an attempt to inspire his team to play harder.
But ESPN color analyst Fran Fraschilla said on air that the coach had a right to be upset, citing how home court advantage can affect officials.
“I gotta be frank with everybody,” Fraschilla began. “He showed us six of those plays from last year in this building and they didn’t get the calls last year. And I’m going to say this and the referees will not like this. In this building, the crowd and sometimes the human nature of officials, it’s a ten-point advantage. I missed that first foul. The charge was clear. But Scott Drew, he almost talked us into thinking that last year there was some calls in that game that did not go their way.

Ex-coach addresses Michigan doubters
“You don’t see it from him very often and again this is a reaction to what he thought happened a year ago in that building when Kansas put on Baylor their first loss of the season. And I also think its a reaction to set the stage for the rest of the season. And by the way, it will fire his team up if not to day when they get back to that locker room and back to Wace. It’s psychology 101 from coaching. There will be people that scream about him acting that way but that guy got 35-6 in the Big 12 the last three years.”
Saturday’s game between the Jayhawks and Baylor was the first meeting of the season for the Big 12’s top two teams. Kansas went on to earn a dominant 83-59 victory, staking its claim for first place in the conference.
After starting the season 15-0, the defending champion Bears are now 4-4 over their past eight games. They’ll look to get back on track beginning at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday when they take on Kansas State.
