Bethune-Cookman star Jakobi Heady enters NCAA transfer portal
One of the top players in the SWAC has entered the transfer portal as Jakobi Heady of Bethune-Cookman is in the portal, On3 has learned.
The Chicago native averaged 15.4 points per game this season. He was named second-team All-SWAC.
Jakobi Heady attended Hillcrest High School, prior to beginning his college career. He then attended Wabash Valley College for his freshman season, finishing as the runner-up for the Freshman of the Year in the conference.
Heady immediately became one of the best players on the Bethune-Cookman team after arriving there, scoring 17 points in the opener against Minnesota.
He topped the 20-point mark on six different occasions while helping Bethune-Cookman to a 17-17 record. Now Jakobi Heady is off to his next home, where he will look to continue to be a big-time scorer.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott discusses transfer portal, timing of players entering
Jakobi Heady was one of several players to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, right in the middle of the NCAA Tournament.
It is an interesting time for college coaches, who are having to monitor the portal, while also lead their teams in the postseason.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott discussed the challenge on Thursday, ahead of his team’s Sweet 16 matchup with Tennessee.

“I’m all about the student-athlete and them having choices. They deserve those choices,” McDermott said. “Could we do it at a different time? I wish we could. I would like the stories from Selection Sunday until Championship Monday to be about the teams in the NCAA Tournament. Not about who’s leaving and who’s joining this program.”
McDermott is one of several coaches frustrated with the current system and the timing of players going into the portal. He would like for the headlines to be focused on the actual basketball at this time of year.
“It’s just unfortunate that that’s such a big part of what’s going on in the daily news, and I think it takes away from celebrating the teams that have had incredible years and have made it to this point,” McDermott said. “Is there a way to maneuver that time a little? I hope so, because it’s very difficult. My staff, while we’re trying to prepare for Tennessee, my guys are also working the portal. You have to.
“That’s an unfortunate thing for a team that’s in the tournament trying to advance, that you have to spend that amount of time because, if you don’t make calls, you’re out. I don’t like the timing of it, but I understand why it’s there.”
