In the first season of the expanded College Football Playoff, Spencer Danielson has led the Boise State Broncos to the Playoff, even earning a first round bye. So, it’s no surprise that now he’s in contract extension talks with the school.

Amid those talks, Danielson has made one thing clear. Boise State is where he feels at home.

“This is home for me,” Spencer Danielson said. “This isn’t do a good job and go try to find another one. This is home. This is where God’s called me and the success we’re having this year as we continue to finish the season strong, and then it’s going to be flip the switch and let’s find a way to do it better next season in ’25. That’s the push. That’s the calling, and we need everybody’s help to do that.”

Spencer Danielson is a California native who first got to Boise State in 2017 as a graduate assistant. At the time, Bryan Harsin was the head coach at Boise State. Since then, he worked his way up to defensive coordinator under Andy Avalos and later became the interim head coach in 2023, getting the full-time job for the 2024 season.

Since taking over at Boise State, Danielson has a record of 16-2 and has won the Mountain West twice. His only losses are to UCLA in a bowl game and Oregon. So, it’s unsurprising to see Boise State looking to invest in him with a contract extension. Still, he has emphasized there’s a lot of value in investing in his assistants and the team itself first.

“For me, it’s all about the people. It’s all about the people. Your staff and your players. First and foremost your players and secondly your staff. That’s everything to me. Not just to be successful on the football field, and continue to push forward for years to come… That’s my call to our supporters, to the administration, to the state, that we have more than enough this season. We’re gonna keep pushing forward… For us to continue to pitch to where college football is for our staff, for our players, we need to grow our staff salary,” Danielson said.

“We need to…if you look at the games and the teams we have to beat at Boise State, we have to push the needle on our staff salaries. Gotta push the needle on the collective and the NIL space for our players. So, that has been something I have been very open about because we have the resources in this community…it is here but we’ve got to push forward.”

For now, the focus is going to be on the first College Football Playoff game in program history when Boise State plays Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
