Class of 2023 three-star Fred Payne has committed to Boston College, he tells On3.

The 6-foot-3 point guard out of Spring Creek (Texas) Legacy School chose the Eagles over Houston, North Texas, Tulane, and Saint Louis.

Payne talks decision

Boston College extended a scholarship to Payne in late February, becoming the first Power Five program to offer him. Just over two months later, Payne and his family made an official visit to Boston College. Now, a couple of weeks later, Payne is committing to the Eagles.

“I chose Boston College because it was the best fit and the coaches made me feel at home,” Payne said to On3. “I also like the style of play and they have a history of developing guards like me.”

Boston College was able to separate itself by making Payne a priority.

“Head coach Earl Grant flew out to watch me work out at 7 in the morning” he continued. That made them jump over all the programs because from the minute they started recruiting me, they always showed love.

“Boston College recruits underrated guards and dogs and I feel like that’s where I’m going to get better as a player and as a person.”

Payne Scouting Summary

“Fred Payne is a lefty guard who plays with a great pace. He can get to his spots off the bounce, using a crafty handle, and has the strength to get his defender on his hip and keep him there. Payne is a confident scorer, able to finish at each level. The lateral quickness may come into question, but he plays on the defensive end with a purpose. The sturdy lead guard has excellent touch, and while he can get tunnel vision at times, he does see the floor well.” – On3’s Jamie Shaw, National Recruiting Analyst
