Jack McCaffery, a four-star power forward in the 2025 class, has committed to Butler and head coach Thad Matta.

The 6-foot-8 rising senior out of West Senior High (IA) chose the Bulldogs over offers from Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and others.

Jack McCaffery is the son of Iowa Hawkeyes head basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, McCaffery is the No. 101 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle. He’s also the No. 23 power forward and the No. 1 player in Iowa. The On3 Industry Ranking is a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

McCaffery on his commitment to Butler

Jack McCaffery discussed his decision to choose Butler with On3.

“The reason I ultimately chose Butler was definitely because of the coaching staff,” he said. “I think coach (Maurice) Joseph and coach (Thad) Matta were both very active in recruiting me. I felt very wanted there and I appreciated that. Also, they’ve recruited me for over a year now so that kind’ve helped my decision a little bit too. I think that was a big factor for me and also the environment of Hinkle. I went on two unofficials and toured the campus and I liked the smaller vibe of it. I like that it’s a basketball school. I think playing in the Big East will be really cool.”

McCaffery’s trust in the coaching staff also led to his commitment.

“Coach Matta and his staff, I think the reason I can trust them is because my brother (Patrick McCaffery) goes there now. He just grad transferred there. Also, I didn’t have the best spring, and they had the opportunity to drop me like some other schools and they didn’t. This summer when I started to play a lot better, some new schools started to reach out, but I felt like staying loyal to them was the right thing to do. I think they’ve been very honest throughout this whole process.”

In his words, what type of player is Butler getting in Jack McCaffery?

“I think my game and play style is very versatile. I consider myself a modern-day point forward. I can handle the ball, I think passing is one of my strengths, and I shoot the ball at a good clip. I think I’ve really improved my back to the basket game. I’ve put on a lot of weight so I can do both, have the ball in my hands and also post up.”

He has a message for Butler fans.

“I think we have a chance to build a really, really nice 2025 class. I know Colt (Langdon) is going in now to redshirt but I think there is a couple of other pieces that we’re going to get. It’s going to be a fun next couple of years at Hinkle so I’m excited and hopefully the fans are too. Go Dawgs!”
