Charlotte 49ers defensive back Mordecai McDaniel is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. He’s a former Florida Gators recruit.

While he played sparingly at Florida over two seasons, McDaniel broke out a bit with the 49ers. The soon-to-be-former Charlotte defensive back accumulated 43 total tackles, three passes defensed and one sack last season with the team.

As a recruit, McDaniel played high school football at St. John’s (Washington D.C.), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 270 overall recruit in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Pyburn, who has one year of eligibility remaining as a junior this past season, tallied 60 tackles, five tackles for loss to go along with one sack, one interception and one forced fumble in 2024. His 60 tackles finished second on the team.

Pyburn is more than a year removed from suffering a season-ending ACL injury late in 2023that forced him to miss the final three games of that season.

Pyburn played a big role in what could be his final game with the Gators, recording a strip sack of FSU freshman quarterback Luke Kromenhoek that Florida teammate D’antre Robinson recovered to set up a one-yard touchdown by running back Ja’Kobi Jackson for a 7-0 lead with 2:28 left in the first quarter of the 31-11 win in Tallahassee.

As a member of the Class of 2022, Pyburn was a three-star recruit out of The Bolles Schoolin Jacksonville (Fla.), according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Pyburn was the No. 80 overall prospect in the state, the No. 50 EDGE in the class and the No. 593 overall prospect in the class.
