Brandon Streeter reaffirms, clarifies earlier comments about Cade Klubnik
After Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter said last week that true freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik will play in 2022, it has many eager to see his skillset. But asked Wednesday about the possibility that Klubnik could make his debut in the season opener against Georgia Tech, Streeter did not commit one way or the other.
“We’re kind of playing it by ear there.” he said. “He’s definitely gonna play this year, there’s no doubt about it. Whether he plays this first game or not, we’ll wait and see. See how practice goes this week and then see how the game flows.”
Klubnik comes to Clemson as the No. 1 quarterback and No. 18 player in the 2022 class according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. He chose the Tigers over offers from a multitude of schools including Georgia, Michigan and Texas.

The true freshman enters this season behind DJ Uiagalelei on the depth chart. Last season’s starter, Uiagalelei struggled and ended the season with more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (nine). Clemson also failed to make both the College Football Playoff and ACC Championship Game for the first time in the past six seasons.

If Uiagalelei struggles again to start the 2022 season, it could cause Brandon Streeter to call upon Klubnik. However, before that happens, the offensive coordinator wants to make sure the freshman is completely prepared.
“Kind of like we talked about with the running backs, I think it’s important that he is ready to go,” Streeter said. “He has deserved to play this year, there’s no question about it. He has earned that right and he’s done nothing but get better each and every day. It really depends on the flow of the game, but we are prepared to do so if we need to.”
Clemson is set to kick off the 2022 season at 8 p.m. ET on Monday against the Yellow Jackets. After that, the Tigers take on Furman in a Week 2 game that should be a blowout and give Klubnik plenty of opportunity to play.
