Clemson has arrived in Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl, and the Tigers held their first practice in the Sunshine State on Christmas Eve.

Afterwards, Dabo Swinney shared where Clemson is in its preparation for the bowl matchup against Kentucky.

“I know it’s Christmas Eve and a Sunday in the real world, but it’s a Monday to us, and so this was kind of a Monday-type practice and kicking this thing off,” Swinney told Clemson Assistant AD for Football Communications Ross Taylor.

“But it was a good start. Guys had great energy. Everybody was here and ready to roll. But I do want to wish everybody out there a Merry Christmas and hope everybody has a great opportunity to spend some time with their family. And I hope everybody will be able to get down here to this bowl game on the 29th.”

Dabo Swinney also provided an update on Clemson’s plan for the rest of the week, including Christmas Day.

The Tigers will enjoy a mix of preparation and Christmas festivities on Monday.

“In the real world down here it’s Sunday. So nothing’s open. It’s Christmas Eve. So we’re going to have a little dinner tonight. We’ve got a little entertainment coming in. We’re going to have some fun with them,” Swinney said. “And then we’ll have a big Christmas brunch for probably about 400 people tomorrow. All of our families and our team. So we’ll do that. Probably have some guys sing, and I think Santa’s going to show up and maybe have some gifts and so forth.

“And then we’ll lock in, have a team meeting probably about noon. Full pads, Tuesday practice. Have a little scrimmage to end it up with our JV and keep getting ready for this game on the 29th.”

RJ Mickens announces decision to return to Clemson for 2024 season

Dabo Swinney received one Christmas present a few days early, before Clemson arrived in Jacksonville.

Tigers safety RJ Mickens announced his decision to return for the 2024 season on Thursday. He took to social media to make the move official, choosing to run it back instead of declare for the NFL Draft.

Mickens was a critical part of the Clemson defense this past year, ranking fourth on the team with 41 tackles to go with 3.0 tackles for loss. It was a solid follow-up to his impressive 2022 campaign in which he totaled 48 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and a career-high three interceptions.

“Clemson, you hold a unique and cherished place in my heart,” Mickens wrote. “To the best fans in the nation, your unwavering support has made these years some of the best of my life. Your passion and spirit fuel my determination every day. After much thought and prayer, I have decided that I will be returning to Clemson for my final year. This university means the world to me, and we’ve got unfinished business.”
