Clemson defender Lannden Zanders enters transfer portal after stepping away from football
Clemson safety Lannden Zanders has entered the transfer portal, On3 has learned. Zanders stepped away from football ahead of the 2022 season due to injuries but is now apparently ready to return to the field.
He was previously a starter for the Tigers, before battling injuries for multiple years.
Lannden Zanders was a starter for Clemson in 2020 — the most recent season he was able to be a regular contributor. During that season he recorded 34 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and three pass breakups over 10 games, with nine starts.
Zanders was also a key contributor for the Tigers as a freshman in 2019. He appeared in 14 games that year, while helping Clemson reach the College Football Playoff. Zanders recorded 21 tackles, including 2 sacks, that season.
He played only one game in 2021 — the opener against Georgia — before re-injuring his shoulder and being lost for the season.
Zanders tried to return to the field for the 2022 season but announced in August of 2022 that he was retiring from football.
“After battling three shoulder injuries in the span of a year, including playing through the 2020 season with a torn labrum and missing most of last season after getting hurt in the season opener, I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step away from playing the game I love,” Zanders said in a statement at the time.
