Big blow for the Clemson Tigers in the second half of the Palmetto Bowl against South Carolina. Nearing the end of the third quarter, Clemson led 30-28, but the Gamecocks had the ball and were driving when Tiger safety RJ Mickens was whistled for targeting while swooping in to stop a run play near midfield.
After review, the call was confirmed as targeting on Mickens. 15 yards for South Carolina and an ejection for Mickens, who will also miss the first half of the ACC title game next weekend vs. North Carolina.

Here was the play that send the Tiger safety packing:
Tough to go out for the rest of a rivalry game in that manner. Also unfortunate that Mickens will miss the first half of the Conference Championship game against the Tar Heels.
Momentum-shifting play on the side of the Gamecocks. They’re threatening to end the mammoth Clemson home winning streak as the game heads into the fourth quarter.
