Clemson defensive tackle to miss time after injury

Clemson could be without one of its veteran defensive lineman for the season opener against Georgia Tech.

Defensive tackle Tre’ Williams recently suffered a leg injury in the weight room, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Monday evening.

Williams did not attend Monday’s practice and is expected to be out for a few weeks.

“Tre’, he’s going to be probably out probably a few weeks, but not anything long-term at all,” Swinney said. “He had a little injury in the weight room, but nothing long-term.”

Williams was set to have a procedure done Tuesday morning. The redshirt sophomore appeared in 11 games last season, with one start.

He recorded 13 tackles, including four tackles for loss.

“Clean him up [Tuesday] morning, actually. It’s nothing major. He’ll be back,” Swinney said. “Hopefully maybe back for Georgia Tech, hopefully, but certainly sooner rather than later.”

The good news for Clemson is that the Tigers are loaded at defensive tackle.

Bryan Bresee and Tyler Davis are expected to start up front, with Ruke Orhorhoro, DeMonte Capehart, Payton Page and others providing depth.

Still, Williams has proven that he can make plays when healthy, and the hope is that he will be back on the field for the Tigers soon.

Adam Randall progressing well

Another Clemson player who could be back on the field soon is wide receiver Adam Randall.

The freshman continues to be way ahead of schedule as he rehabs his torn ACL, and he was recently the fastest Clemson receiver on the field at a Tigers practice.

“We GPS all these guys. He had the fastest time of all the wide receivers,” Swinney said. “I looked at it again, I’m like ‘Wait a minute.’ He ran like 20 miles an hour or something like that. It’s crazy.”

Swinney expects Randall to be ready to go sometime in September.

When he does return, he is expected to immediately be a contributor.

“He’ll help as soon as we can get him back. He was as good as we had in the spring. It was awesome,” Swinney said. “If he’s healthy, he can help anybody in the country. There’s no doubt about that.”
