Clemson commit named On3 MVP of All-Star game practice
Clemson commit Peter Woods turned heads throughout his senior season at Thompson High in Alabaster, Ala.
Woods is now doing the same during practices leading up to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.
Charles Power, who is the Director of Scouting and Rankings for On3, has been at practices this week and has been very impressed by Woods.
Power named the defensive tackle his On3 MVP for Wednesday.
“Peter Woods turned in a dominant showing at Alabama’s practice on Wednesday morning. The Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson product was unblockable in inside drills and 11-on-11 sessions,” Power wrote. “Woods lived in the backfield all morning and teed off on the opposing offensive linemen. It looked like he and the talented Alabama defensive line made it difficult for the offense to get much done in the practice session.”
Woods committed to Clemson over the summer, choosing the Tigers over in-state power Alabama. Defensive tackles coach Nick Eason did an excellent job recruiting him.
Clemson is losing several defensive linemen off of this year’s team, whether to the draft or graduation.
Woods has the chance to come in and help out immediately as a versatile piece along the defensive line. He is ranked as the No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 23 overall recruit in the On3 Consensus Rankings.
“Woods lined up all over the defensive front, even kicking out to defensive end at times. His initial quickness off the ball and ability to convert speed to power was readily apparent. The Clemson pledge has a compact build at around 6-foot-2 and uses the lower center of gravity to his advantage in exploiting leverage,” according to Power. “We saw Woods get underneath the pads of taller offensive linemen and use his strong base and heavy hands to walk the linemen back to the quarterback. He really took off in pass rush situations, showing some eye-catching burst and bend around the edge.”
That is obviously excellent news for Clemson. The Tigers have a history of producing elite defensive linemen, and it appears as though Woods has a strong chance to be the next one from the program.
It’s not just physical ability that stood out to Power. He also has an excellent motor.
“We were also highly impressed with Woods’ overall effort level,” Power wrote. “He practiced the hardest of any player for Alabama on Wednesday and it showed. Even towards the end of practice, Woods was chasing after running backs from sideline-to-sideline. The Yellowhammer State standout ranks as the No. 48 overall prospect in the 2023 On300.”
