Clemson held its annual “BIG Weigh-In” on Thursday, a day before the team begins fall training camp.

The Tigers had several players that were challenged to gain weight over the summer. Other players were asked to lose weight. Both missions were accomplished in 2021 heading into a monster season where the Tigers have a legit shot at a national championship run.

Here are some takeaways from Clemson’s weigh-in:

  • Xavier Thomas is at 264, which is a good playing weight for him
  • Will Shipley is stronger than he gets credit for and at 203 is plenty big enough to run between the tackles
  • Dacari Collins going from 200 to 216 is impressive
  • D.J. Uiagalelei at 247 is a good weight. Big enough to take hits but still can be deceptively fast
  • Jake Briningstool is another freshman who put on good weight
  • 224 seems pretty big for Ajou Ajou but perhaps that’s where the staff wants him
  • Kevin Swint is all the way up to 255 as he transitions to defensive end
  • Troy Stellato has apparently added more than 20 pounds since arriving on campus. Would be big if he’s still able to be one of the fastest players on the team
  • Trenton Simpson is up to 235 and appears to still be in great shape
  • Lannden Zanders added 17 pounds, perhaps to be more physical in the backend
  • Freshman defensive end Cade Denhoff is up 30 pounds since arriving on campus
  • Payton Page is up to 334. That’s a big defensive tackle
  • Clemson has 17 players over 300 pounds — Matt Bockhorst, Bryan Bresee, DeMonte Capehart, Tayquon Johnson, Tristan Leigh, Mitchell Mayes, Jordan McFadden, Payton Page, Walker Parks, Dietrick Pennington, Will Putnam, Hunter Rayburn, Marcus Tate, Paul Tchio, Bryn Tucker, John Williams and Tre Williams. That number was 9 last year.
