How Will Shipley ended up at Clemson after growing up in an NC State family

CLEMSON — Will Shipley is trying to get as many tickets as possible for Clemson’s game against NC State on Saturday, but not all of his family members are likely to be cheering for Clemson this weekend.

Shipley grew up in an NC State family, with both of his parents attending NC State.

In fact, 26 members on his mom’s side of the family went to NC State. Shipley has been able to convert some to Tigers, but not all.

“There will definitely be a good amount rooting for the Wolfpack. That’s one thing I’ve come to realize. I think they’re all cheering for me, no question, but when you’re talking about my mom’s side of the family, they’re diehard Wolfpack fans,” Shipley said. “I’m sure a bunch of them will be sporting red on Saturday.”

Shipley, who ultimately chose Clemson over Notre Dame, considered NC State until late in the recruiting process.

But after it was announced that running backs coach Des Kitchings would not be returning to NC State’s staff following the 2019 season, Shipley all but eliminated the Wolfpack.

“When Des Kitchings kind of left, or got fired, whatever the case was, is kind of when my interest in them went away. Coach Kitchings and I’s relationship was really, really good,” Shipley said. “I think that coaching change is a huge thing, especially when you get closer and closer to your commitment date. So when that happened I kind of veered away from them.”

Shipley has established himself as Clemson’s top running back and is likely to get a heavy workload come Saturday.

The forecast is calling for wet weather due to Hurricane Ian. That is just fine with Shipley.

“I’m freaking pumped. I’m so excited,” he said. “Whatever environment, whatever conditions are thrown our way, this football team is so ready to go. I’m ready to go. It’s one that I’ve had circled since last year, falling short to them. So yea, I’m so excited.”

This game means more to Shipley than most, not only because the Tigers lost in Raleigh last season, but also because of the family ties he has to the school.

“Especially early on in the recruiting process, there was a lot of pressure to be funneled to NC State,” Shipley said. “We’ve definitely got Wolfpack in our blood. It’s a little awkward early on, but I think they’ve kind of learned and adapted that I’m all in and I’m a Clemson Tiger.”
