Dabo Swinney addresses Fred Davis, Malcolm Greene lawsuit
News broke Wednesday of a lawsuit involving Clemson players Fred Davis II and Malcom Greene stemming from a 2021 incident involving a United States Postal Service worker. Dabo Swinney addressed the situation during his Zoom call with reporters on Wednesday, saying it likely won’t change their status with the team.
Davis and Greene were allegedly racing or drag racing when they crashed into the USPS vehicle, driven by Karen Alvarez. The incident caused her severe, long-term physical disabilities, which is why she’s filing the lawsuit.
Swinney said the news didn’t catch him off guard, and added the players had to live with the consequences.

“I think everybody knew this was coming,” Swinney said. “It’s a civil suit. That stuff will play out. But certainly, we all know there’s consequences. Even though it was a year ago and they’ve done a lot of things internally and all that stuff, that’s something, as I said, there’s going to be consequences for that for a long time. That’s life. But it doesn’t change anything as far as their status on the team.”
Swinney said the team has known all the details since the incident occurred in July 2021. As for how Davis and Greene are doing from a mental standpoint, Swinney didn’t say much except that it’s a tough situation.

“I don’t know,” Swinney said. “I’m sure it’s a very sad situation. Somebody almost lost their life. They’re really fortunate that the lady involved survived because she’s got a lot of challenges. Again, I don’t think anybody’s surprised that now, this will play out on the civil side, as well.”
Postal worker sues Clemson defensive backs Fred Davis, Malcolm Greene after 2021 accident
A United State Postal Service worker is suing two Clemson football players for causing her severe, longterm physical disabilities as a result of a car crash in July 2021. The two Clemson players, Fred Davis II and Malcolm Greene, were allegedly racing or drag racing when they crashed into the USPS carrier vehicle that Karen Alvarez was driving, according to the complaint filed in South Carolina’s 13th judicial circuit.
Both players remain on the Clemson football roster as of Wednesday afternoon. Davis was suspended by the team for a period to start the 2021 season after being arrested shortly following the crash.
Per the complaint, Davis was driving 115 mph in his 2021 Dodge Charger while weaving through traffic on US-123 near Clemson, while apparently racing Greene. They were in a 55 mph zone when the brakes were applied less than three seconds prior to colliding with Alvarez in her mail vehicle, according to onboard vehicle monitors.
