Dabo Swinney: 'No regrets' in how Clemson built roster in offseason
Much has been made about the decision of Clemson and head coach Dabo Swinney to not get help out of the transfer portal this past offseason. The Tigers did unsuccessfully attempt to land an offensive lineman out of the portal, but they did not seek help at defensive end — a place where play has been inconsistent so far this year.
Swinney was asked during his press conference on Tuesday if the decision to not get a defensive end out of the portal was the right one for Clemson. The Tigers currently rank No. 95 nationally in yards per carry defense and are 65th nationally in sacks with 17. Swinney revealed that he does not regret the way Clemson put together its roster.
“We love our roster. We love our roster,” Dabo Swinney said. “Sometimes you have some injuries and things like that. So don’t have any regrets on how we put our roster together this past year.”
The biggest injury situation for Clemson along the defensive front has been the fac that Peter Woods has been in and out of the lineup. The former five-star recruit has missed two games this season and has been limited in others. He also was banged up this past weekend in a loss to Louisville and is considered day-to-day moving forward.
Dabo Swinney was asked how injuries to Peter Woods have hurt the Clemson defensive front.
“We’re growing,” he said. [Jahiem Lawson’s] done some good things. [AJ Hoffler’s] really coming on. We feel like he’s developing. Armon [Mason] is getting a little bit of experience as well.

“Peter’s one of our best players, for sure, but we’ve got to keep getting better. Fortunately we’ve got most everybody back and think they’ll keep developing.”
Clemson is 6-2 (5-1) on the season entering Saturday’s game at Virginia Tech. The Tigers have had a solid year, but last week’s game against Louisville was ugly.
Clemson was dominated in all facets and trailed 26-7 entering the fourth quarter. Swinney is hoping his club can bounce back this weekend and play better in all three phases against the Hokies.
