Dabo Swinney on Bill Belichick taking North Carolina job: 'It's incredible'
The news that Bill Belichick will be the new head coach at North Carolina has set in for many around college football, including Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
Now, Swinney and Belichick will now be directly competing for recruits in the same league, something he didn’t envision would ever happen in his career. Instead, him and the eight-time Super Bowl-winning head coach will be attending ACC spring meetings with the other coaches in the league.
“It’s incredible,” Swinney told reporters on Monday. “I think it’s a great compliment to our league, for sure. It’s hard to get better than Coach Belichick. He’s an unbelievable, proven coach and winner. I think it’s really cool.”
Swinney said that he’s only met Belichick one time during his career, but is looking forward to working alongside the longtime NFL coach, as well as the rest of the coaches in the ACC in the future — not to mention competing directly against him and his Tar Heels.

“I think we play them next year, so, yeah,” Swinney continued. “That wasn’t on my I wouldn’t know my radar coming into the season that the guy that’s got more Super Bowl wins than anybody would be coming to our league. I think it’s really cool, great opportunity for those kids that are in that program.
“I don’t have any doubt that he’d do an awesome job.”
To Swinney, adding Belichick to the ACC is nothing but a positive for the ACC. Swinney said there’s no indication that he won’t be successful in Chapel Hill. All you have to do is look at his track record and what he did with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
For now, however, Swinney doesn’t have to worry about Belichick and the Tar Heels as they’re gearing up to take on Texas on the road in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET live on TNT and Max.
