Fred Davis facing ‘internal discipline’ after reckless driving charge
CLEMSON — Fred Davis is facing internal discipline from the Clemson football program after being charged with reckless driving.
The Tigers defensive back turned himself in to the Clemson Police Department on Sunday and was booked for reckless driving. The charges come less than two weeks after he crashed into a mail worker on Clemson’s campus.
The Clemson Police Department’s traffic collision reconstruction specialists analyzed evidence from the crash and determined Davis was driving 115 MPH when he made contact with the postal worker. The posted speed limit is 55 MPH.
Davis received a bond hearing and was released but now faces reckless driving charges.
“Fred Davis remains with the program but will be subject to internal discipline,” a Clemson spokesperson said. “Grounds for internal discipline for misdemeanor charges like this are covered under the terms of the Clemson Student-Athlete Handbook, which says that the head coach can recommend a course of action, and upon concurrence of the designated CUAD administrator, administer sanctions.”
Current South Carolina law does not have an enhanced penalty for reckless driving that results in bodily injury. There is a bill in the S.C. Legislative, House Committee on Judiciary, H.3507, that is attempting to add “Great Bodily Injury.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is expected to address the situation and provide an update the next time he meets with the media.
A Jacksonville native, Davis appeared in 11 games last season, recording 13 tackles and two pass breakups in 183 snaps. He’s expected to provide depth at cornerback for this season.
Davis signed with Clemson as a four-star recruit in the class of 2020. The 6-foot, 185 pound defensive back was rated as the No. 53 overall player and No. 7 cornerback in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
