Greg McElroy questions why Clemson is inside College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings
The release of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season came with plenty of reactions from various fanbases, analysts, and plenty of others debating whether certain teams are ranked too high and others are ranked too low.
The Clemson Tigers came in at No. 23 in the initial CFP Rankings. It’s a spot that college football analyst Greg McElroy disagrees with, even believing that the Tigers do not belong in the rankings altogether.
“I still am trying to figure out why Clemson at this point, outside of knowing that they’ve dominated some very bad teams, why is Clemson right now in the top 25?” McElroy asked. “I’m curious, honest question, and this is not knocking on Clemson. I just don’t think they’ve done anything to warrant being in the top 25.”
Clemson started off the season with a disappointing 34-3 loss to Georgia, who was ranked No. 1 in the country at the time and now sits at No. 3 in the initial CFP ranking. But after that setback, the Tigers went on a tear, ripping off six straight wins before Louisville stopped them in their tracks last Saturday. Because of the win, Louisville now sits one spot ahead of Clemson in the rankings.
“Clemson’s best win this year is against a 5-4 NC State team, and we’ve seen NC State against quality competition all year. I don’t think NC State’s that good of a 5-4 team,” McElroy explained. “So Clemson, really to me, has no business being in the top 25.”

NC State is the only team Clemson has beaten this season with a winning record, with their defeated opponents currently combining for a 20-31 record on the season. And even though teams barely control who they play, McElroy is impressed with the resumes of several other teams more than the Tigers.
“People that are killing Missouri right now for being in the top 25, I understand that. Missouri is 6-2, but at least Missouri beat Vandy. Vandy is not in the top 25, but at least Vandy is good. NC State has not been this year,” McElroy concluded.
Clemson’s three remaining Power Four opponents all have winning records and could help boost their resume and spot in the rankings with wins. Starting with a hostile road matchup this Saturday at Lane Stadium against Virginia Tech.
