At ACC Media Days on Tuesday, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney shared some injury updates. They included the son of a Division I college football coach, safety Tyler Venables.

Tyler Venables, the son of Oklahoma coach Brent Venables, underwent hip surgery and will be out long term, according to a report from Jon Blau of the Post and Courier. Venables will be a likely redshirt in 2023, though the Tigers could potentially get him back late in the season.

NCAA rules allow players to participate in four games while still retaining a redshirt, and Venables has not yet taken a redshirt.

In addition to the Tyler Venables injury, Swinney provided two other updates.

Cornerback Myles Oliver and defensive tackle Tre Williams are both dealing with injuries that could cause them to miss part of fall camp. The Tigers will open camp in the next couple weeks, knowing the season will begin with a conference road game.

Clemson is set to open the 2023 campaign with a road trip to Duke for a Labor Day game on Sept. 4.

As the year unfolds, the Tyler Venables injury will bear monitoring, with the potential for some late additional depth to be added to the mix.

Quarterback change could spark Clemson

Clemson is coming off a couple down years by its standards after becoming a regular in the College Football Playoffs under Swinney.

How can Clemson get back?

Well, the quarterback change the team made late in the year going from DJ Uiagalelei to Cade Klubnik could be a big part of that.

“We called the Orange Bowl,” ESPN analyst Greg McElroy said. “It was not their best performance. But I think in talking to Dabo Swinney beforehand, this was a team that had to make a quarterback switch. This was a team that had some challenges on the perimeter. This was a team that wasn’t quite as dynamic along the offensive line as they anticipated. And a team in the back end that was good, defensively good at all three levels, but for whatever reason, they just lost some close games.”

Make no mistake about it, either. Though Clemson has been ‘down’ the last couple years, the program is still competing at an elite level.

The Tigers might just show it again this fall.

“It’s just so funny, where Clemson’s at right now. And it’s an amazing testament to what Dabo Swinney has created. Is it not? Dabo has done an amazing job. When we looked at an 11-3 season with an ACC championship and a New Year Six bowl game invitation. Oh, what a failure,” McElroy said laughing. “That’s a good thing. So let’s just take that with a grain of salt. I think Clemson will be back in the mix again this year in the ACC. But I think with the pieces they return, I have them actually (finishing) second in the ACC as of right now.”
