Paul Finebaum defends Clemson's case to make College Football Playoff
Paul Finebaum actually defended Clemson’s chances to make the College Football Playoff. It’s not quite defending Dabo Swinney, but Finebaum is on board with the Tigers.
Now, to make the CFP, they need a couple of things to happen. Clemson is already done with ACC play and just has rival South Carolina left on the schedule.
But to even have the playoff discussion, Clemson has to be the Gamecocks this weekend.
“They’ve really had a tremendous year since they got run over by Georgia early on,” Finebaum said on Get Up. “And what’s really interesting, Greeny, Saturday at home, they get a chance to beat South Carolina. I know a lot of people around the country are saying, so what? Well, South Carolina may be playing as consistently and as well right now is any team. They haven’t lost since Alabama in October, and they are a formidable opponent, and really an outside shot, outside at getting into CFP with a win over Clemson.”
Both teams are neck and neck in the CFP rankings, but a Clemson win would put them at 10-2. That’s certainly a respectable record for the College Football Playoff.
However, Clemson can only make the ACC Championship Game if Miami loses to Syracuse this weekend. If that’s the case, Clemson will play SMU for the conference crown.

Safe to say, the Tigers have to win out (as long as they get into the ACC Championship) to make the CFP.
“Now it’s on to the next one,” Swinney said previewing Clemson-South Carolina. “It’s a great opportunity to play in a rivalry game. This is a game that’s got a lot of national significance as well. Fun to be a part of that. Look forward to competing our butts off in it.
“Hopefully get a few guys back this week health-wise that hopefully give us a best-case scenario from a health standpoint as we get ready to take on a really, really good South Carolina team. I don’t know what we’ll be ranked, two, probably top 15 team. It’ll probably be the highest ranked rivalry game in the country. So it’s exciting to be a part of that.”
The good news for Clemson is that the Tigers will host the Gamecocks. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
