Shelton Lewis injury update: Dabo Swinney classifies Clemson CB as day-to-day
Clemson cornerback Shelton Lewis is on the mend and seemingly not dealing with any severe injury after leaving the Tigers’ scrimmage over the weekend. Head coach Dabo Swinney was mum on the defensive back when discussing his status on Thursday.
Swinney offered up two tidbits on Shelton. And both were quite brief.
“He’s day-to-day right now. It’s lower body,” Swinney said.
Lewis left Saturday’s scrimmage with an injury, according to The Clemson Insider.
The sophomore cornerback suffered a lower leg injury and was seen on crutches at the scrimmage, The Clemson Insider reported.
Lewis is expected to be a starting cornerback for the Tigers this fall after playing a key role on the Clemson defense as a true freshman in 2023.
The Georgia native appeared in all 13 games last season, making two starts. He finished the year with seven tackles, seven pass breakups and a pair of interceptions.
Shelton Lewis signed with Clemson as a three-star cornerback in the class of 2023. The 5-foot-11 DB was ranked as the No. 705 overall player in the country in the class of 2023, per the On3 Industry rankings.
He came in and immediately impressed and was one of six true freshmen to appear in all 13 games for Clemson last season.
The Tigers need Lewis back healthy as soon as possible as they are set to open the season against No. 1 Georgia in less than three weeks. The Bulldogs have one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Carson Beck, who is sure to test Clemson’s secondary early and often, especially if a potential starter in Lewis is not available.

Offensive linemen Ian Reed and Watson Young will miss the 2024 college football season, as will defensive back Myles Oliver, according to Chapel Fowler.
“Dabo Swinney says three Clemson football players will be out for the year: reserve OLs Watson Young and Ian Reed and reserve CB Myles Oliver,” Fowler posted on Twitter. “Reed hurt his knee. Young and Oliver have lingering injuries. Nobody else will be out for an ‘extended period of time.’”
Of the three losses, Ian Reed might be the biggest. The former four-star recruit appeared in one game last season while redshirting, but he’s a player the coaching staff has said in the past that it is excited about.
Reed was rated as the No. 16 interior offensive lineman in the country for the class of 2023, per the On3 Industry rankings.
As for Watson Young, he just signed with Clemson this past recruiting class. The local product was rated as a three-star recruit in the class of 2024, per the On3 Industry rankings.
Finally, Myles Oliver is the final Clemson player set to miss the 2024 season. Oliver is another local product who signed with the Tigers for the class of 2022 but has been limited with injuries since arriving on campus.
