Clemson QB Taisun Phommachanh fully cleared, No. 2 QB for Georgia
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Taisun Phommachanh has been cleared from his Achilles injury, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced on Thursday.
The former four-star quarterback from Connecticut injured his Achilles in the spring game. The injury was listed as a torn Achilles and the expectation was that Phommachanh would be out for most of the 2021 season, if not all of it.
Thankfully, the 6-foot-3 quarterback is a fast healer.
“He’s available. He’s ready to go. Practiced every day. So excited about having him back,” Swinney said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s amazing.”
The return of Taisun Phommachanh means Clemson will have a scholarship quarterback with experience in the program to serve as insurance if something were to happen to D.J. Uiagalelei. Phommachanh is in Year 3 with the Clemson program.
He attempted 17 passes and had seven rush attempts in four games last season. That depth will be vital as Clemson was looking at opening the season with walk-on Hunter Helms or true freshman Will Taylor as the primary backup to Uiagalelei.

“Getting Taisun back is great. He’s practiced really well. A lot of confidence,” Swinney said. “Taisun’s the No. 2 guy. He’s practiced all camp. He’s fully done pretty much everything since that first week. They just fully cleared him the other day. I think it was Monday. He’s looked really good.”
Swinney and his staff decided to not go into the transfer portal to add another scholarship quarterback after the spring game injury to Taisun Phommachanh. That is looking like a good decision.
