Kylon Griffin

After choosing not to sign during the Early Signing Period, Montgomery (Ala.) Catholic Prep safety Kylon Griffin has led a quiet recruitment. But it exploded Tuesday night with an offer from one of the country’s elite programs.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder announced that Clemson and safeties coach Mickey Conn have extended an offer to him.

Griffin is the No. 880 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 74 safety and the No. 35 prospect in Alabama.

Griffin holds more than a dozen offers and was actually committed to Mississippi State from the end of March until Dec. 1, when he announced his decommitment. He received an offer from Boston College a little over two weeks ago, but hasn’t seen much other movement in his recruitment. That changed in a major way with the offer from the Tigers.

Clemson has the No. 12 recruiting class in 2022, according to the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. But the Tigers currently have just 12 prospects signed after a rash of late decommitments following Brent Venables’ departure for Oklahoma. Five-star Daylen Everette and four-stars Jaren Kanak, Keon Sabb, and Jihaad Campbell all backed off their pledges and headed elsewhere. Clemson currently has one safety committed in the 2022 class with four-star Sherrod Covil.

Griffin accounted for 44 tackles, six pass defenses, five tackles for loss and one forced fumble as a senior for a Montgomery Catholic Preparatory team that went 13-1. He notched 55 tackles, 10 passes defended, two tackles for loss and two interceptions as a junior.
