Good morning, Clemson fans, and welcome to Tigers Today. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Tigers sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Clemson football, recruiting, basketball and more in Tigers Today.

Clemson extends new offer to 2022 specialist

The Tigers don’t necessarily have to sign a kicker or punter in the 2022 recruitment cycle. But B.T. Potter and Will Spiers are each entering their senior years and adding one wouldn’t hurt.

Clemson extended a new offer to Robert Gunn over the weekend. A kicker and punter from Pinellas Park (Largo, Fla.) High School, he’s considered one of the top specialists in his class. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect holds offers from Air Force, Army, Florida Atlantic and Texas.

Gunn was at Clemson for the Elite Retreat, along with a handful of other top prospects in the 2022 class. Last season he was 32-of-35 on extra-point tries and averaged 44.6 yards per punt on 10 attempts. The rising senior also hit a 47-yard field goal and was 7-of-8 on field goal attempts.

“Robert is without a doubt a Power 5 FBS scholarship-ready kicker/punter and the best 2022 kicker in the country,” writes a coach on KickingWorld.com. “I believe he will be kicking in the NFL one day. … He’s humble, reliable, is extremely coachable and dedicated to his craft, and is someone that would make an immediate positive impact with team culture.”

Tigers land preferred walk-on commit

Clemson hosted two preferred walk-ons over the weekend. The Tigers landed a commitment from one on Sunday.

Offensive tackle Mason Johnstone announced his verbal commitment on Twitter after his trip to Clemson. A class of 2022 prospect, he only has one Division I offer from BYU.

“Blessed to announce my commitment to Clemson University,” Johnstone said. “Thank you to my family, teammates, coaches, the amazing staff at Clemson and most importantly God for this dream come true.”

A rising senior at Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, he has a 6-foot-7, 250-pound frame that can add depth to Clemson’s offensive line.

South Carolina NIL legislation set to be signed

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster will be on Clemson’s campus Monday to sign the state’s Name, Image and Likeness legislation.

The bill won’t go into effect until July 1, 2022, but McMaster will hold a signing ceremony at 2 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium in the West End Zone.

“Governor McMaster will be at our campus on Monday to sign the bill,” Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich said on SportsTalk Radio last week. “We are really looking forward to him being on our campus.”

The NCAA and Congress are trying to work towards uniform laws by July 1, when legislation in Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, Florida and Mississippi is set to begin.
