Class of 2023 three-star small forward Asa Thomas tells On3 he’s committed to Clemson.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pound prospect out of Lake Forest (Ill.) High chose the Tigers over offers from Illinois, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and others.

Thomas ranks as the No. 140 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the No. 28 power forward, and the No. 3 recruit in the state of Illinois.

On3’s evaluators are slightly higher than the industry on Thomas, ranking him 129th overall in the class.

Thomas becomes Clemson’s first commitment to the class of 2023. In the class of 2022, the Tigers landed three-star SF RJ Godfrey (No. 161), three-star SG Dillon Hunter (No. 185), three-star PF Chauncey Wiggins (No. 206), and three-star SF Chauncey Gibson (No. 231). Clemson also hit the transfer portal this offseason, landing Brevin Galloway (8.3 PPG at Boston College).

Thomas talks commitment to Clemson

“The chance to play for Coach (Brad) Brownell, Clemson’s all-time winningest basketball coach, at an original ACC school, is one I couldn’t pass up,” Thomas said to On3. “The atmosphere in Littlejohn is top notch and will be a great place to play home games. Clemson’s strong academic reputation was also a big factor in my decision. It’s an ideal combination of academics and athletics for me. All the resources available for student athletes are really impressive. Go Tigers!”

Scouting Summary

Asa Thomas has good size with a sturdy frame and good length. He is a tough-nosed player. High IQ. He can move his feet as a team defender on the wing. Will bang down low and use leverage. The lateral quickness will be the question, lack of explosive pop. But he knows his game. He has a quick release on his jump shot and moves well off the ball. He can handle the ball for two and three dribbles in the half-court. – On3’s Jamie Shaw, National Recruiting Analyst
