Utah transfer power forward Jake Wahlin has committed to Clemson, On3’s Joe Tipton reported. He spent the past two seasons with the Utes and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Wahlin went from a reserve role as a true freshman to starting in 23 of 33 games this past season. He averaged 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists across 23.5 minutes per game.

Wahlin attended Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, originally committing to BYU out of high school. He then spent two years on a mission trip before returning and ultimately choosing to play for Utah.

Utah parted ways with head coach Craig Smith in February after four seasons where he failed to make the NCAA Tournament. That in mind, it makes sense that Wahlin would want to move on for a fresh start. He ranks as the No. 374 overall player and No. 84 power forward in the portal according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

Wahlin is the ninth Utes player to enter the transfer portal following the departure of Smith. That includes starting center Lawson Lovering and starting forward Ezra Ausar and Mike Sharavjamts.

As for Clemson, this is the fourth transfer addition. The Tigers are coming off of their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament this past season but suffered an upset in the first round against McNeese State.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.

Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
