Clemson receiver Joseph Ngata put the Tigers on the board for the first time with a second-quarter touchdown catch against Syracuse on Friday. Ngata fell backward as he snagged a 19-yard pass from DJ Uiagalelei and stayed inbounds in the corner of the end zone.

The catch was Ngata’s first of the game, and the touchdown his first of the season. He had his best game of the year this past week against Boston College with four catches for 111 yards.

The Tigers have struggled to start the season and currently sit a 3-2 and 2-1 in the ACC. The offense has been a major point of concern as it is putting up only 21.2 points per game, which ranks 112th in FBS.

The early 7-0 lead was a good start, but it wouldn’t last for long. The Orange marched 91 yards downfield for quarterback Garrett Shrader to punch it in the end zone from two yards out.

The score remained tied at 7 with 30 seconds remaining until halftime.

It seems the Tigers will need another Joseph Ngata touchdown catch or two if they hope to escape this one. Aside from a 49-3 victory against a much weaker South Carolina State team, all of Clemson’s games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

After making six consecutive College Football Playoff appearances, the Tigers seem destined to end that streak this year. The ACC title and a New Year’s Six bowl is still within reach, but it requires near perfection from here on.

That includes against a Syracuse team that boasts one of the best running backs in the conference. Sean Tucker was already at 130 yards rushing by halftime on only 11 carries. The Clemson defense has to do a better job bottling him up if it hopes to come out with a win Friday.

After this game, the Tigers hit the road to play Pittsburgh in Week 8.
