Anonymous opposing Pac-12 coach says 2023 is a 'lose-lose' for Colorado
Colorado has utilized the portal in a way never before seen since the newest immediate transfer rules have been implemented. Buffs head coach Deion Sanders has lost an unprecedented 58 players and has brought in 50 more.
Seven of those 50 recruits were rated four-stars coming out of high school, while one was a five-star. 43 others were three-stars and below, meaning Sanders has a team full of — on paper — mid-level talent in a Power 5 conference.
One anonymous Pac-12 coach believes this unconventional way of building a roster will ultimately hurt Colorado in the long run.
“It feels like a lose-lose for Colorado with Prime. Either he’s gonna be really good really fast and leave for another gig, which, looking at that roster doesn’t seem possible,” the coach said, via Athlon Sports. “The alternative is that they’re gonna be bad, and they’ll end up firing him in a big circus.”
“Jackson State was so good because they could get FBS-level guys and beat on FCS rosters. That won’t happen here. They’re not a good roster right now. How does he handle losing big? We haven’t seen that.”

Even so, to say the tides around Boulder, Colorado are shifting is an understatement. The hype is real.
An amazing 47,277 fans showed up to watch the Coach Prime era kick off for the spring game back in April. That number is good for 88 percent of the stadium’s maximum capacity — a spring game record for the program. The previous attendance record for a spring game at Colorado, 17,800, was completely shattered. It was the 10th-best spring game turnout of any Power Five program and the most in the Pac-12 by over 10,000 fans.

Sanders’ debut as Colorado’s coach is set for Sept. 2 on the road at TCU. It’ll be one of the toughest matchups his group will face all season and is a very gutsy way to start his Power 5 coaching career.
After taking on the national runner-ups from a year ago, the Buffs headline another marquee matchup against Matt Rhule’s Nebraska Cornhuskers. Oregon and USC are both on the docket for Colorado in September, so there are plenty of opportunities for Sanders’ squad to show the naysayers that they’re here to compete in his first year as head coach.
