Julian Lewis, a Top-10 QB recruit in 2025, committed to Colorado on Thursday. Even so, Cam Newton believes that decision doesn’t definitively mean that Deion Sanders will still be in Boulder.

Newton said so during his weekly appearance on ‘First Take’ on Friday. He said that Lewis’ commitment to the Buffaloes won’t mean that Sanders will stay there as he knows top talent will follow him wherever he goes.

“No, absolutely not,” said Newton.

“What I will say is, no, Deion is not committed to staying at Colorado with this being a sign. What I do see is – like Deion said before. He said, ‘I’m coming in with baggage. And that baggage so happens to Louis Vuitton,'” Newton said. “So, no matter wherever Deion Sanders goes, he’s coming with great baggage, by the way, and he’s setting the parameters of what’s to be.”

However, what it does prove to Newton is that Coach Prime can recruit.

Sanders got JuJuLewis, a Top-40 overall player and four-star recruit per On3’s Industry Ranking who had interest from schools like USC and Georgia, to choose Colorado. If that’s what he can do on the recruiting trail in high school as well as the transfer portal, it further makes him “the greatest threat to college football” to Newton.

“I would like to say this about Deion Sanders,” Newton said. “Deion Sanders is the greatest threat to college football. I will say this again. Deion Sanders is the greatest threat to college football since Nick Saban. And he may even be more threatening than Nick Saban because Deion Sanders has relatability.”

“When Deion Sanders comes into a kid’s living room and he’s trying to convince a kid to say, ‘Hey, come to Colorado, or go wherever I’m going to go,’ because so many parents, families and coaches and even players can relate to who and what Deion Sanders has been through. So, yes, that’s why I say what I say,” said Newton. “When you’re trying to recruit a kid, it’s bigger than just NIL, which is a lot. But it goes back down to the circumstances of saying, ‘How can I convince a mother, how can I convince a father, how can I convince the uncle, how can I convince the brother?’. And when Deion Sanders shows up? ‘Must be the money’. The culture is gonna bite down with Prime every time.”

Adding a talent like Lewis says a lot about the current state of the program at Colorado, especially with the context of how this season is going for the Buffs in year two under Sanders. Still, as for Coach Prime himself, Newton doesn’t think it says a thing about him being anywhere long-term.
