Shedeur Sanders: ‘We got all the negative energy out of the building’
Yet again the offseason for the Colorado Buffaloes is highlighted by a significant amount of roster turnover through the NCAA transfer portal. With 40 players departing from the program through the portal and 32 joining so far this offseason.
But according to On3’s College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings, Colorado’s activity has been positive given their losses and gains. Ranked the No. 2 team in the rankings with an index score of 68. But even beyond the numbers, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders confirmed that the Buffaloes are better off in Boulder given how their offseason has transpired in the portal.
“There was definitely a lot of highs and lows, even with the portal going on. But I feel like we got all the negative energy out the building, so now it’s just a positive vibe now,” Sanders said following Colorado’s spring game.
“It’s no complaining, it’s really no anything. We gotta go out there and play with a clear mind and everybody’s going to want the ball, everybody’s going to want their part,” Sanders added. “But at the end of the day, I don’t care if end each game with 150 yards. I’m just trying to win this year, that’s the biggest think is to win and everybody knows they’ve got to play their role in able to do that this season.”
Colorado ranked atop the transfer portal rankings last year after bringing in 55 new players through the portal, but this only brought them a 4-8 record last season in year one under new head coach Deion Sanders.

Team chemistry is always a big question through a mass overhaul of roster turnover. But with Shedeur Sanders saying that negative energy has now left the building, Colorado’s addition of talent and players who fit off the field as well could lead to more success for the Buffs next season.
“The guys that’s really leaving, they made that decision on their own. I don’t feel like that messes up the chemistry because of course we’re bummed about it, but whatever 11 players are out there, we’re going to make the most of it,” Sanders explained. “So if they gotta do what’s best for them, that’s best for them.”
“And the guys that’s coming in, they already know. I tell them straight up what the mentality is,” Sanders said. “It’s no jealousy, it’s no anything in the locker room because that’ll separate it. And the moment it’s that then I have a problem, and then everybody else has the problem, and the leaders of the team have the problem with that player. And then it just infects the whole team, so we try to get all those guys out of here and be able to have a positive mindset. Being able to just work like a pro.”
With the vibes and the roster looking better this upcoming season, it will surely be interesting to see how Colorado’s debut in the Big-12 Conference looks this year in one of the most highly anticipated seasons in Boulder to date.
