The Colorado Buffaloes football program is putting on a show to cap off their spring practices in Saturday’s spring game. The Buffaloes saw a massive influx of players and talent, with former Jackson State head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders taking over the program following an 1-11 season. One player who transitioned from Jackson State to Colorado with Sanders was his top recruit from the 2022 recruiting class, cornerback Travis Hunter. During the Buffaloes’ spring game, Hunter took some time to illuminate the deciding factors behind his transferring to the Pac-12 program, besides his head coach.

“Just come in and be able to do what I want to do. Being able to play both sides of the ball like I wanted to. You see me starting offense. I know all the offensive plays. Now I’m going to get back into defense during the summer break right here and hit at it hard,” said Hunter.

This season at Colorado, Hunter is looking to contribute on both sides of the ball. During the spring game, there were several times where he lined up at wide receiver on offense. And as he explained, during spring practices, Hunter has been primarily focusing on learning the Buffaloes’ offense in preparation for the 2023 season.

In spring games and practices in general, it is customary for quarterbacks to wear a different jersey color to signify their position, ensuring that they are not tackled or hit. But on Saturday, the quarterbacks weren’t the only ones in a different jersey color. In Colorado’s spring game, offensive players wore white and defensive players were in black. But Hunter was in grey. And it turns out there was a legitimate reason for the difference in his jersey color.

“Because I’m playing both sides of the ball right now. I’m on both starting groups. So we won’t make the quarterback (make a) mistake and pass me the ball.”

There were a number of players participating in Colorado’s spring game wearing grey uniforms to highlight they were playing on both sides of the ball. Instead of having them switch between white and black uniforms, Sanders had his two-way players meet in the middle and wear grey.

Hunter is likely to be one of the best, if not the best, players on Colorado’s defense in 2023. But he is also looking to compete with star quarterback Shedeur Sanders for the title of best offensive player as well. And given the talent he possesses, the number two overall recruit from the 2022 recruiting class will likely give the Buffaloes quarterback a run for his money.
