Deion Sanders believes media is doing 'everything in their power' to keep two Colorado players out of Heisman race
Travis Hunter is one of, if not the, favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this season. Three of On3’s four experts currently have the Colorado cornerback/wide receiver in their top spot. As Deion Sanders will tell you, if the Buffaloes continue to win, Hunter will be a surefire bet to be in New York City and potentially hoist the trophy himself.
Even so, Sanders believes another Colorado player should be sitting next to Hunter as a finalist — Shedeur Sanders. The quarterback is not receiving much buzz regarding the Heisman and Sanders believes the media are trying incredibly hard to prevent it.
“What I really want is two Buffs there,” Deion Sanders said. “I think they’re trying everything in their power to not have two Buffs there. Because if they have two Buffs there, guess what? They’re going to have three Buffs there. Because then I’m going. So, I think they’re trying to keep me.”
Shedeur Sanders ranks inside the top three in completion percentage (72.9%) and passing touchdowns (24) across the country heading into Saturday’s game against Utah. His 2,882 yards is good enough for sixth but even so, there is not much Heisman discussion surrounding the quarterback.
Getting to New York would be enough for Sanders, not wanting to take the honor back with him to Boulder. According to his father, Hunter is the one they believe should win college football’s most prestigious individual award.

“Shedeur don’t really care about that kind of stuff,” Deion Sanders said. “He wants to win. Travis wants to win too but Travis wants to win that Heisman a lot more than Shedeur does. Because Travis is more deserving and Shedeur feels that way, as do I. Travis is the best player in the nation.”
Hunter could make all kinds of history by winning the Heisman Trophy. A 30-year drought would be broken in Boulder, being the program’s first winner since 1994 with Rashaan Salaam. Positionally, DeVonta Smith was the last non-quarterback recipient in 2020, while a defensive player has not won since Charles Woodson.
Everyone inside Colorado appears to be cheering for Hunter but having Sanders alongside him is the goal.
