Deion Sanders blasts report of Julian Lewis redshirting in 2025

QB Julian Lewis is in a competition right now to be the starting quarterback this season at Colorado. That certainly, per Deion Sanders, doesn’t make him a player who the Buffaloes will be redshirting this fall.
A reporter asked Sanders during his press conference on Thursday about “talks” that Lewis would redshirt as a true freshman this upcoming season. Sanders didn’t know from who he had heard that from as he asked him several times where he got that thought.

“Who you, who you, who did you hear say that? Who? Who? Who?” Sanders asked. “Who is Nick Evans? Who? Who?”
When clarified that it was a student reporter, Sanders said that was all he needed to know. He would say that has never been said in regards to the plans for Lewis unless something were to change those plans. However, again, Lewis is currently in their quarterback battle alongside QB Kaidon Salter.
“Self-explanatory,” Sanders said. “Nobody said that, man. Nobody said that.
“That, that’s not our plan. That’s not his plan, but, if it happens, it happens. If he sustains an injury that puts him in that situation? But you never know. I mean, the guy could, could be a two, or he could be a one. I don’t think we’re going to put him in a box like that. We’re not doing that.”

Lewis, out of Carrollton, Georgia, was the No. 56 recruit in the country as a four-star in the 2025 cycle. He also rated as the No. 7 QB in the class and the No. 7 player out of his state. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. With that, Lewis was the top signee by far for the Buffs in ’25.
Now, with the absence of Shedeur Sanders, Colorado is considering all options to replace him at quarterback. That has been coming down to Lewis, that four-star freshman, or Salter, one of the top quarterbacks from the transfer portal, after coming in from Liberty.
Coach Prime is one who will tell it like it is to anyone and everyone. That includes this instance where he felt the question should have come correct about Lewis ahead of next season.
“You got to know, young fella. When you come here with something, I’m going to call you out on it now so be prepared next time, alright,” Sanders warned. “Like, I don’t know who that is.”
