Deion Sanders jokingly refuses to let Chad Johnson join Colorado coaching staff
Deion Sanders won’t let Chad Johnson work on his Colorado coaching staff in an official capacity, despite the latter’s desire.
When Coach Prime joined the man formerly known as “Ochocinco” on the Nightcap Podcast, Sanders appreciated Johnson’s skills. Just not as a full fledged coach yet.
Fellow host Shannon Sharpe mentioned how Sanders has a family affair going on in Boulder, where his family is in and around campus in numerous capacities. That led to Johnson’s request.
“I have a question,” Johnson said. “We can make it any bigger family affair. Now we can make this a package deal. I can talk to baby girl about coming on down to Colorado if you give me a coaching job and we can make it a package deal.”
That’s where Sanders clarified the difference between a coaching job and a “coaching job.”
“I’m not gonna get you a coaching coaching job, I’ll get you a coaching job,” Sanders said. “I get your coaching job, not a coaching coaching job because I know you ain’t gonna do right.”
Then, the hilarity between Sanders and Johnson ensued.
“Does that mean I’m getting money money or money?” Johnson quipped back.
“Nah you getting more MO,” Sanders said.
“I need the N-E-Y,” Johnson said.
“You ain’t getting no N-E-Y because I don’t trust you yet because I know you ain’t going to do right,” Sanders said.
That’s where Sanders mentioned how Johnson could be a great coach down the line. Heck, Johnson proved it on the field at least.

“You gonna be a heck of a coach now,” Sanders said. “I trust your skills and your knowledge. And what you gonna spit to the kids. I trust that.”
“Whoa, spit to the kids,” Johnson asked. “I’m gonna have on my cleats. I lead by example by actually doing.”
“You right, you right,” Sanders said. “I do reconcile that you will do that.”
“Yeah so when it come to my money, I need the N-E-Y at the end of my money,” Johnson said.
“You see, that’s where we gonna have a problem,” Sanders said. “You don’t want to build to that? Like if you build to that, you can’t just come in.”
“Who can’t,” Johnson said.
Sharpe simply said Sanders coming on the program was “amazing.”
Well, did you get all of that? Sanders and Johnson surely make an interesting pair when it comes to conversations, debate and content. Johnson could very well join Sanders in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well one day.
Anyway, Sanders with or without Johnson is focused on getting Colorado to improve upon a 4-8 campaign in 2023. So far, the recruiting trail and transfer portal have been kind.
