Deion Sanders has some big expectations for Colorado in Year 2 of his tenure in what could be a make or break year for how he’s perceived.

It’s no secret Sanders and the buffaloes received unprecedented attention and hype last year, before the trail was ultimately derailed. But as he told Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt, he’s ready to get back to it for 2024.

After Klatt said he could see Colorado compete for a Big 12 title based on the schedule, thus putting them in the playoff hunt, he asked Sanders what his expectations were for the fall.

“To do just what you just mentioned,” Sanders said. “Because I feel like we addressed the needs and tremendous concerns. Protecting the quarterback. Forget he’s my son, forget all that because when you place that, the hate comes. And you start getting crazy.”

Klatt added the stat that Shedeur Sanders was the most battered quarterback in the country. But when the signal caller was protected, Colorado had one of the most efficient offenses.

So not only does Deion Sanders want to protect his son while the latter is in the pocket, he wants more proper coaching this year. It seems like they have it with more coaches with NFL experience, exactly how Coach Prime drew it up.

“And let me tell you something about pros, and I have nothing against collegiate coaches because there’s some great ones out there, I just have a better rhythm, a better feel,” Sanders said. “Because that’s my thought process. And that’s the process that I want these young men to understand where they’re headed.

“So if they’re taught by a pro, understanding how to be a pro makes it much more realistic. And I can comprehend the style and the way they teach. So you talk about over 127 years in this building of NFL coaching. Experience is unbelievable man. And I absolutely love it.”

There were moments last year where you could say, ‘yeah, Sanders and Colorado could’ve had more,’ as Klatt alluded to. But if Coach Prime’s words are any indication, Colorado could be much better in the coming months.

“I think we’re better not only on the field, we’re better off the field,” Sanders said. “And it’s not an insult to the guys that were here the previous year. But I think we got better, man. I think I’m better. I think the whole thing is better and we’re not done. From when this interview is going to be aired, we’re probably gonna have probably 10 to 15 more grown men that can help us right now.

“On special teams as well as offensively and defensively, added to this team. Few from high school, several from the portal. So I love what I’m seeing in spring practice. I love where I know we’re headed. I love what I know what’s coming into the house and the communication process and the teaching of the staff. I love it. I really do.”
