Deion Sanders explained what his definition of chemistry was when it came to Colorado’s football program.

The head coach pointed out that the word is only used in a negative connotation, at least a majority of the time. The word “chemistry” was brought up a lot regarding Sanders’ team due to massive roster turnover ahead of Year 1 and 2 this coming fall.

In fact, Sanders is quite confident in this new group of players, meshing with the one’s still around.

“Everybody talks about that word chemistry,” Sanders said on ESPNU’s coverage of Big 12 Media Days. “I never hear that unless it was losing. I only hear chemistry when someone’s losing. And I’ve been on teams … where guys can’t stand each other, but they got it together. This team is phenomenal. I know we grabbed a lot of guys out of the portal but you got to understand we grabbed a lot of mature guys. A lot of guys that are smart, tough, fast, disciplined and they have character.”

In the day and age of technology and the digital age in its entirety, Sanders went with an old school approach to create team bonding.

“You’re not gonna see them doing something stupid when the lights go out at night,” Sanders said. “They’re really character guys and bringing in a multitude of those guys in the locker room that now when you eat at the tables in the cafeteria, we have a big thing in the middle. I have them put their phones in there because I want you guys to talk. So they get to know each other. So now they not only have that responsibility on the field, but off the field.

“They’re getting to know each other and that’s a lost art even at home with our own kids. Everybody’s on their phone, nobody’s talking and we demand that they talk now and get to know one another.”

“First of all, Coach Sanders has done a great job infusing excitement into that program and talent,” Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said Tuesday. “His own sons are terrific players. We didn’t see Shedeur [Sanders], but he’s — obviously, watching the tape, he’s a terrific talent.

“Essentially he’s put Colorado football back on the map. Year two, I’m sure they’re looking for progress. They started off very strong last year. Injuries caught up to them and didn’t end the way they wanted, I’m sure. But he’s definitely rejuvenated things in Boulder.”
