Saturday’s Alamo Bowl will be a big occasion for a ton of reasons. But these four quarters will mean more to the Sanders family than anyone else. For the final time, Deion Sanders will be coaching his two sons, Shedeur and Shilo, in the college game.

The Colorado head coach did a pregame interview just before kickoff, getting emotional talking about the moment. When asked to talk through his current emotions, Sanders could not help but reflect on everything they have been through.

“The journey,” Sanders told ESPN sideline reporter Taylor McGregor. “The journey. Been a tremendous, tumultuous journey. And we’re making it. I’m sorry, this is tough. This is tough.”

Father, son relationships have been in college football before but not quite like this. Sanders took Shedeur and Shilo to Jackson State before making the jump to the FBS level at Colorado. An immense amount of success followed, particularly this season.

But all Sanders could think about was back to when his sons were kids. He coached them at times during high school as well before moving up to the college game. The journey began a long time ago and comes to a close in San Antonio.

“I’m seeing when they first put on uniforms, you know,” Sanders said. “When they first started. When I first started coaching them. The good, the bad, the indifferent. The ups and downs. Just the journey. It’s been a heck of a journey and I’m thankful and appreciative. I really am. I thank God for it. I’ve got to get it together. I’ve got to coach. I’ve got to get it together.”

Both Shedeur and Shilo are off to prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft once the Alamo Bowl against BYU is finished. The former is projected to be one of the top players selected from Green Bay, being viewed as a potential franchise quarterback. His name will be heavily discussed until Roger Goodell announces it in late April.

Sanders will be there the entire way, supporting no matter where they end up. Things will be just a little different though, as somebody else will be considered their head coach. One final ride with the Buffaloes and as the moment finally becomes a reality, Sanders let the emotions fly in the interview.
