Deion Sanders jokes about Kordell Stewart’s reaction to Shedeur Sanders breaking records
Shedeur Sanders put the nation on notice as he led Colorado past TCU 45-42 and broke multiple school records in the process — some of which were long-standing that some notable alum were blown away with.
“Shedeur [Sanders] broke nine school records and Kordell Stewart called me not happy about it … The first player with 500 plus yards [during their] FBS debut nationally since 1996,” Colorado head coach Deion Sanders said on Tuesday. “What that means is, we have some gentlemen who can play this game. But that does not mean anything going into this week.”
Stewart, who played for Colorado in the early 1990s, has gone down in record books as one of the Buffs’ greatest quarterbacks of all time. He ranks fifth in total career passing yards with 6,481 through four seasons under center.
Sanders ended up throwing for 510 yards during the matchup — a mark Stewart never came close to catching as his career-high single-game passing yard performance capped at 409. Sanders’ four touchdowns tied Stewarts’ career best from the 1992 season as well.
Another Colorado great turned-college football analyst, Joel Klatt — who was on the call with Fox Sports — called it the greatest performance by any Buffaloes quarterback ever. Klatt said that he isn’t sure whether or not Sanders’ performances down the stretch this season will rival his Week 1 showing, but at least on Saturday, he was the best quarterback in the country.

Colorado has since moved into the AP Top 25 Poll at No. 22 and are the most talked about team in the country. It might be hard to put that all behind them, but moving forward — as Coach Prime said — Colorado has to worry about the next game up, which just so happens to be a rivalry game against an interesting Nebraska team.
“It’s a whole new focus. We have a new understanding on what’s at stake. This is a rivalry as we understand now … This rivalry, we take it very seriously,” Sanders said. “It’s the first home game in front of our in front of buff-nation, and we had a good practice today. We really did. I thought we could have took it up a notch with our focus but we had a pretty good practice overall.”
The Huskers, who are also under new leadership on the sidelines and under center this season, are coming off a loss against Minnesota that saw the Gophers win it on walk-off field goal.
