Report: Deion Sanders has had 'no official conversations' regarding NFL coaching jobs
As speculation grows around Deion Sanders and a potential jump to the NFL, the Colorado coach hasn’t had any conversations about a head coaching job in the league, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz. His “sole focus remains on winning at Colorado this season” as the Buffaloes stay in the College Football Playoff picture.
Sanders’ name has been floated a few times for an NFL opening, particularly in Dallas. The Cowboys take a 3-6 record into this week’s matchup against the Houston Texans, leading to questions about Mike McCarthy’s future with the franchise.
However, Sanders has said multiple times he has no intention of coaching at the next level even after his son Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter head to the NFL Draft this year. But that hasn’t stopped some from wondering if Coach Prime could end up at the next level with a franchise for which he played.
“This brother, Prime Time Deion Sanders, and the job that he’s doing … I believe that the Dallas Cowboys should tank the rest of the season, get the No. 1 overall pick so you can draft Shedeur Sanders and, by the way, hire Prime Time Deion Sanders as your head coach for the Dallas Cowboys,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said. “I think that should be Jerry Jones’ master plan. That’s right, I said it.
“Hire Prime Time Deion Sanders. You’ve gotta tank the season to make sure you can get his son as your quarterback and you move forward that way. That is what I believe the Dallas Cowboys should do.”

SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum also discussed the idea of Sanders taking over the Cowboys. He compared it to when Coach Prime left Jackson State to become the Buffs’ head coach last year and how the conversation is different about his potential fit in Dallas.
“It makes more sense for the Cowboys, really than it did even at Colorado,” Finebaum said. “In some ways, it’s an easier job. I know that sounds ridiculous, but what he’s had to overcome at Colorado, to get them in a situation where we’re talking about them as conference champion, or maybe even a CFP entrant, is really spectacular, and one of the craziest stories that I’ve ever seen.
“The reason why I think he works with Dallas, and it was just mentioned a minute ago, not only does he help the locker room, he might be the only person in America that Jerry Jones will listen to, and that’s the most important thing. Yes, he relies on his son, but he would also look at Deion as his other son. I think that could be the ticket. We all know the glitz and the glamour of the most valuable franchise in sports. You put Deion in there, not only as the centerpiece of that — put some great coaches around him, which obviously has to happen, and let Jerry pay attention to someone other than himself.”
Colorado went 4-8 in Sanders’ first season at the helm in 2023, but the Buffs bounced back in a big way this year. They take a 7-2 record into this week’s game against Utah and are in the CFP rankings for the first time in program history. In a wide-open Big 12, CU appears to have a path to a conference title and its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
