Deion Sanders on Colorado's talent: 'We come out the womb bumping and running'
The Colorado Buffaloes are back in the Big 12 conference, which they helped found in 1996. With their return to the conference comes a return to Big 12 Media Days.
At this year’s event, Colorado had some of the biggest names in college football present and representing them in Las Vegas, NV. Arguably, the biggest name is none other than head coach Deion Sanders. During the Big 12 Media Days, the Colorado head coach shared his thoughts on the Buffaloes’ talent heading into the 2024 season.
“Let me start off with Justin Mayers, the right guard. Tyler Brown, played for us in Jackson State, was not eligible last year,” Sanders said. “He will probably be starting at the left guard. Jordan Seaton is a darn five-star, and this kid is a pro, just like some of these other guys. Kahlil Benson, he’s a killer. I mean, he’s ready to fight right now. I’m serious. Hank (Zilinskas) is gonna probably start at the center position. I said Justin Mayers, but we have depth, as well, in that line. They probably have a collection of 10 guys that could possibly start for you.”
Some individuals probably suspected that Sanders would start with Colorado’s star quarterback and his son, Shedeur Sanders when discussing the Buffaloes’ talent. However, he used the moment to highlight the individuals who will be responsible for keeping the star quarterback upright and who play along the offensive line.
Sanders wasn’t finished there. As he continued, he also highlighted the weapons that will be at Shedeur Sanders’ disposal this season, particularly at wide receiver.

“Then, when you think about the receiving corps [and] what we already had, you throw in a LaJohntay Wester [and] shoot, like, come on,” said Sanders. “Now, you couple him with Jimmy Horn in the slot, and you got some problems. And then when we get on the outside, those guys can flat-out do it, and Shedeur has a rhythm with them, and you can see it in practice.
“In practice, we have several corners that are pros, I feel. And we come out the womb bumping and running. That’s what we do. So, the work that we’re getting right now is phenomenal, and the ball placement and what they’re doing, what they’re accomplishing right now, and just going back and forth with the expectation and the intensity of, even the workouts, is phenomenal. I’m proud of it.”
Colorado is a trendy pick to compete for and possibly win the Big 12 title in its inaugural season. But the Buffaloes will have to do battle with the Utah Utes and Arizona Wildcats, who joined them from the Pac-12. Colorado will also have to beat out the Oklahoma State Cowboys, who have a top-ranked superstar talent on their roster, and running back Ollie Gordon.
Each one of the three teams mentioned above, Sanders and the Buffaloes, will have to see on the field in 2024. However, if Colorado’s talent pans out and plays through the expectations of their head coach, we could see the buffaloes representing the Big 12 as a part of this year’s College Football Playoff field.
