Deion Sanders on re-building roster at Colorado: ‘We already know what we’ve got coming in’
Colorado has officially surpassed 50 players entering the transfer portal. It’s a bit of a shocking number, even being called an exodus, when compared to every other team in college football. However, head coach Deion Sanders isn’t surprised or concerned by this. In fact, it was always the plan.
During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Sanders explained his approach to roster building at Colorado.
“We already know what we’ve got coming in,” Deion Sanders said. “Y’all just don’t know what we have coming in. We already know what we’ve got on the way in. They probably at the airport right now. We already know what we’ve got coming in. They just don’t know.”

“There’s no way that I could put new furniture in this beautiful home if we don’t clean out the old furniture. And that’s not a shot. It’s great furniture, a lot of people would love it, and a lot of people are gonna love it, but that’s not what we want. That’s not what we desire.”
Deion Sanders then compared how he is treating Colorado’s now former players to how a company would treat its employees. In that sense, he’d argue, this is an important life lesson for them.
“And the thing about it, I don’t want people to think it’s just a product on the field – and kids gotta realize we told them all this was possible – when a whole coaching staff gets terminated, who do you think is next? That’s real life. There’s no takeover in this business world that there’s not change being made. Change is being made at every business opportunity in this country. When someone takes over something new of standard, they make changes. And that’s what we’re going to do.”

Despite some controversy and debate surrounding his approach, Sanders remains confident. After the spring game, Deion Sanders said, “You really don’t understand what this comes with. I love every minute of it. I’ve got some dogs coming. Jesus, I’ve got some dogs coming.”
Lincoln Riley praised Deion Sanders
Last season, Lincoln Riley took over at USC and used the transfer portal heavily as he tried to quickly rebuild the program there. During an appearance on First Take, Riley spoke about Deion Sanders, praising the job he’s done so far.
“I think any time like that where maybe you’ve had a program — any part of the country — that’s been down, to see it start to come back and get momentum and get excitement like that, that’s good for college football. We want all of our good programs out there to really be good. And we want great coaches. We want energy around the game. And Deion’s certainly brought that. I know he’s going to do a tremendous job there,” Riley said.
“I think it’s great. I think it’s great for the Pac-12. I think it’s great for college football. Deion is obviously one of the greatest players that’s ever played the game. And he’s got a big personality. He’s got just a great kind of vibe about him that, obviously, he’s done a tremendous job getting into the coaching side of it. And he’s brought a lot of energy and excitement.”
