The Colorado Buffaloes are going into their second season with Deion Sanders at head coach and his son Shedeur Sanders at quarterback. This comes a year after Shedeur flashed his talent but now wants to take a major step forward.

At Big 12 Media Days, Deion Sanders met with the ESPNU broadcast. There, he broke down and shared the ways that Shedeur has elevated his game this offseason.

“Work on some of the little, mechanical things,” Deion Sanders said. “He has a tremendous quarterback coach out of Houston. He does a wonderful job.”

“But he works on the little things and not just the mechanics of footwork and everything and ball placement and releases, but getting to know his players, his receivers, where they want the ball. You can see in seven-on-sevens, after practice, grabbing a guy, pulling them to the side, and he’s telling him what he saw.”

One of the most important things that Deion Sanders has seen from Shedeur this offseason is how he’s worked with the offensive players around him. That’s something that’s extended beyond his skill players too.

“The workouts that are not structured to schedule, that he has those guys get out there — and they can’t wait to get out there. The relationship with his linemen and they don’t just love him as a football player, but they love him as a friend and they want to protect him, want to go for the extra mile…So, he’s just a very headsy young man, a very smart man,” Sanders said.

“He’s a forward thinker as well, and I’m proud of him in every aspect of life.”

In 2023, Shedeur Sanders completed 69.3 percent of his passes for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns to only three interceptions. That was behind a struggling offensive line that led to him finishing the season injured.

Daniel Jeremiah compared Shedeur Sanders’ playing style to Geno Smith

NFL Draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah recently looked ahead at the 2025 NFL Draft. With that, he took a long look at Shedeur Sanders, comparing him to Geno Smith.

“Like Smith during his time with the Mountaineers, Sanders plays in a wide-open college offense that showcases his polish as a passer. Both Smith and Sanders have beautiful throwing motions and deliver a firm/catchable ball. While each is capable of taking the free yards presented in the run game, neither is dynamic as a ball-carrier,” Jeremiah said.

“Following a long, rocky start to this NFL career, Smith blossomed into a Pro Bowl quarterback. I see similar upside in Sanders. As my Move The Sticks Podcast partner Bucky Brooks would say, both of these signal-callers are more shooters than scorers. They are point guards who play really well within the confines of the play call; they aren’t unscripted, creative playmaker types. It’ll be important for Sanders’ NFL team to realize how to best utilize his skill set.”
