Ahead of his first season at the head of the Colorado Buffaloes, coach Deion Sanders shared his personal goal for the program. The NFL legend has made an incredible splash since taking over the position and leaving Jackson State, bringing a swagger and excitement to the school that seems unrivaled across the nation.

However, despite these high expectations and incredible fan support before they play their first game — Sanders took a moment after their Black and Gold Spring Game on Saturday to explain his personal expectations for the season and his future with Colorado.

After the scrimmage finished, Sanders spoke briefly about what he felt called to do with the Buffaloes program. According to Sanders, his goal isn’t just winning football games — but to unite the program and its people together and develop winners in their community.

“It’s not just about football. It’s about bringing people together, it’s about uniting people,” said Sanders. “All ethnicities, all social climates. It’s not just about football. People get so caught up in the Ws and Ls. We’re going to win some games. But we’ve got to make sure these kids are winners on and off the field and amongst the community. I don’t care what ethnicity they are. We just want to bring people together and give them hope.”

Sanders and his message of inclusion among the fans and players doesn’t come completely out of left field either, as his current coaching resume was built on the work he accomplished with Jackson State. A constant powerhouse among HBCU (Historically Black Colleges or Universities) schools, Sanders quickly became the unapologetic face of the program and the SWAC.

Now, Colorado fans are expecting to see a similar level of energy and attitude on the field this season as well with Sanders bringing his style and coaching abilities to the Pac-12. And the proof was on full display in the stadium on Saturday.

Despite weather issues, Buffaloes fans filled their home stadium of Folsom Field for the scrimmage. And filled was not an understatement, as it was revealed that the crowd in attendance for the game was 47,277; or 88 percent of the stadium’s maximum capacity.

It should come as no surprise that the number in attendance set a new spring game attendance record for the Buffaloes. That 47,222 more than doubled the previous attendance record for a spring game at Colorado — 17,800 — that was set 15 years ago in 2008.
