Deion Sanders stresses importance of strong cornerbacks
Deion Sanders stressed the importance of strong cornerbacks for Colorado to play in the Pac-12 Conference. Not only that, Sanders went a step further to build a defense from the outside-in no matter the conference.
Sanders has yet to coach a down for the Buffaloes after three years at Jackson State. But he certainly made an impact on the recruiting trail and transfer portal so far.
Being a Hall of Fame corner himself, Sanders knows the position pretty well. He opened up about one of the most important facets of a football team.
“I’m not just gonna say (you need corners in) this conference,” Sanders said. “You need elite corners and elite pass rushers from anywhere. A lot of coaches build inside-out. I build both ways. I build outside-in when I’m thinking defensively. We take the pass rushers and corners to Let’s go get it. Okay. Now, let’s go get the big boys to make sure they stabilize and control the run game.
“But when you are able to attain a couple guys of that caliber, not only guys that are really good corners, but they make plays on the ball. Both those guys have tremendous receiver ability and capability and some of the other guys we brought in and some of the guys we’re bringing in.”

“We’re not done, this is just a pause,” Sanders said. “This is just a comma. Because there’s a lot of people that’ll bungee jump and pour on out this spring because they’re gonna be disappointed in the playing time, the commitment or the level of participation that they’re garnishing, and we’re going to take full advantage of that.
“So we’re not done. This is just the comma for spring. But I love where we are and what we have. I love the secondary for what I see on paper.”
Based on those comments, one can expert Colorado and Sanders to hit the transfer portal hard before the season, again. Travis Hunter was the No. 1 transfer in the cycle and he followed Sanders from Jackson State to Colorado.
Hunter was the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2022 when he committed to the HBCU. That was the debut of Sanders’ recruiting prowess at a different level.
Colorado also has the No. 2 overall transfer portal class, only behind UCLA.
