Deion Sanders will not name starting quarterback in spring: 'Ain't nobody care about that'

Over 20,000 Colorado fans were in attendance inside Folsom Field on Saturday to watch the Buffaloes spring game unfold. It was the third-best turnout for a CU spring game in program history.
Something at the top of many of those fans minds — which one of the quarterbacks they’ll see will end up starting for the Buffaloes this fall? However, head coach Deion Sanders isn’t in any type of rush to name a successor for his son, Shedeur Sanders, who left Colorado to pursue his selection in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
“Ain’t nobody care about that, because I may change my mind tomorrow,” Sanders said. “So what benefits us to name a guy the? What does that do for us as a team? Nothing. That may do something for you guys, so you can have something to talk about, but that don’t do nothing for us. It does nothing for us. I’m not doing that.
“Matter of fact, I don’t even know who’s going to be that guy right now, anyway, so I don’t have the propensity to do it, because I don’t know. They gotta perform with consistency.”
It appears to be a two-man race for the job, with Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and incoming five-star recruit Julian Lewis leading the charge. Sanders said that Lewis is still a young man, but he doesn’t care about his age, or the stage of development he’s in. If he wins the job, Sanders expects Lewis to play to his potential. Still, neither QB is there just yet.

“They got a ways to go,” Sanders admitted. “They gotta improve. They gotta do some things you guys are so used to [Shedeur Sanders] that you gotta understand that these guys are different. They have different strengths and different qualities about themselves, and we gotta make sure we maximize their potential, utilizing those things.”
For Salter, he comes in with the experience. You know what you’re going to get from the former Flame. Over the course of four seasons, Salter had 5,889 yards, 56 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, a 58.7% completion percentage, 2,006 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns. He set career highs in 2023 with 44 total touchdowns, 2,876 passing yards and 1,089 rushing yards in 14 games.
Those numbers certainly read ‘starting quarterback’ in the eyes of many. However, there’s no denying the five-star potential in Lewis. Whatever decision Sanders makes at the end of fall camp, it won’t come easy for the Buffaloes headman.
