Deion Sanders set his expectations for Colorado in Year 1 of his tenure and it might not be the exact answer everyone expected.

Sanders simply said the team is going to exceed expectations, whatever they might be. In usual “Coach Prime” self, Sanders refused to put an exact number of what quantifies success this fall.

Whatever the record ends up being after 12 games, Sanders made a promise to Colorado.

“I don’t know,” Sanders said. “I can’t give you that. If I give you that, it’s going to go viral. You gotta understand, when I talk, it’s going viral. We’re going to exceed your expectations. We’re going to exceed your expectations. And I guarantee you, when you play us, you’re going to know you played against us. You’re going to know that.

“You’re going to feel it, you’re going to feel it. I can not wait till you see. Everybody makes a big deal of what’s not here, but you need to make a big deal of what’s coming. Because what’s coming is far greater than what’s gone.”

The Buffaloes won one game last season so even two wins is an improvement. But that’d be a low bar set by Sanders.

After the spring scrimmage finished in April, Sanders spoke briefly about what he felt called to do with the Buffaloes program. According to Sanders, his goal isn’t just winning football games — but to unite the program and its people together and develop winners in their community.

“It’s not just about football. It’s about bringing people together, it’s about uniting people,” Sanders said. “All ethnicities, all social climates. It’s not just about football. People get so caught up in the Ws and Ls. We’re going to win some games. But we’ve got to make sure these kids are winners on and off the field and amongst the community. I don’t care what ethnicity they are. We just want to bring people together and give them hope.”

The immense rebuild at Colorado isn’t over as Sanders has yet to even step onto the field. The roster makeover, new culture and swagger is very nice on paper right now.

But when it comes time to take on TCU, it could be a different story. Or, Sanders could be a world builder at this point and turn Colorado into what he actually envisions.
