4-star ATH Kam Mikell commits to Colorado: 'It feels like family out there'
Statesboro (Ga.) four-star athlete Kam Mikell took long looks at SEC programs like Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and South Carolina.
And at different points in his recruitment, the Bulldogs and Volunteers were considered the leaders to ultimately land him. Mikell took his time with his choice, not wanting to rush into one he’d later want to change. Along with the Southeastern schools was Colorado in his top group. The Buffaloes program under Deion Sanders excited him more each time he visited, and he could see himself donning the black and gold.
On Thursday afternoon, Mikell opted for the Buffs over the Vols, Bulldogs, Aggies and Gamecocks, making his commitment official.
“I have had Colorado up there for a while,” he told On3. “I have visited three times and I have liked them from the beginning. After my last visit [to Georgia], I have just been thinking about it and working to make the final decision.”
What Mikell has seen in Boulder this year is a rebuilding of the CU program that he wants to be a part of. He believes he can make an impact on the program and it can do the same for him.
“Coach Prime and his marketing was a big part of my decision,” he added. “He can really help with my brand. Coach Prime also has played all the sports I have played, he has played both sides of the ball like me and I know he can really help me. He has been in a lot of the situations I have been in, so I believe in him coaching me and helping me develop.”
Boulder feels like home to Mikell
While his other options were closer to home, Mikell loved the atmosphere in Boulder on his visits there. The culture around the program appealed to him, as did the surroundings.

“It feels like family out there,” he said. “I feel comfortable with the people. Everyone is welcoming, all are part of the team and I like the culture when I am there. I like the order, the structure and what the people are about there. And who wouldn’t want to wake up and see the mountains and surroundings there every day?”
Mikell is also intrigued by the opportunity to play on both sides of the ball, similar to what Travis Hunter has done in his first year there.
“They now want me to start at receiver, then play some defensive back,” Mikell said. “They want to work me in on both sides of the ball like Travis Hunter. Seeing what they have done with him made a big impact. I would love to play both sides of the ball and not limit myself to one position. I know Colorado has a plan for me.”
Mikell has developed a good relationship with Sanders, but it was also the assistants that he connected with who made a big difference. Coach Nick Williams and wide receivers coach Brett Bartolone led the way, and he is excited about the chance to play for both. He believes in what the coaching staff in Boulder is building, and he has high expectations for what the program can accomplish in the next few years.
“Coach Prime can do big things at Colorado,” he said. “He had to come in and change a lot of things. We have to recruit, get impactful players and get the team right. I believe in Coach Prime and what he can do. He will get Colorado right.”
