Report: Pat Shurmur expected to join Colorado coaching staff as analyst
Deion Sanders is reportedly set to add another former head coach to his staff at Colorado. This time, though, it’s someone with NFL experience.
Pat Shurmur has been seen on the CU campus and is expected to join the Buffaloes as an analyst, according to CBS Sports’ Carl Reed. Shurmur made a name for himself as an NFL coach, notably as an offensive coordinator, but spent nine years on staff at his alma mater, Michigan State, in the early 1990s.
Sanders is preparing for his first season at the helm in Boulder and notably hired another former head coach to his staff in former Kent State head coach Sean Lewis. Former Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster is also on board as the Buffaloes’ tight ends coach after previously working with Sanders at Jackson State.

Colorado is preparing to open the 2023 season and lift the curtain on the “Coach Prime” era Sept. 2 against TCU, which is fresh off a trip to the College Football Playoff a year ago. The game will be in Fort Worth and start at noon ET on FOX.
A look at Pat Shurmur’s coaching journey
After starting as a graduate assistant from 1988-89, Shurmur became the Spartans’ tight ends, offensive line and special teams coach from 1990-97. Following a year as the offensive line coach at Stanford in 1998, he jumped to the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive line and tight ends coach from 1999-2001. The Eagles then moved him to quarterbacks coach from 2002-08 before he took over as the St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator from 2009-10.

Shurmur got his first head coach job with the Cleveland Browns from 2011-12, but struggled to a 5-23 record before his firing after the 2012 season. That’s when he returned to Philadelphia to become the Eagles’ offensive coordinator from 2013-15 and eventually interim head coach after the firing of Chip Kelly.
In 2016, Shurmur left to become the tight ends coach for the Minnesota Vikings and took over as interim offensive coordinator later that season. He then became the full-time offensive coordinator in 2017, winning the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award.
After that season, he became the New York Giants’ head coach from 2018-19 and again finished with a 9-23 record. Vic Fangio then brought him on board as the Denver Broncos’ offensive coordinator from 2020-21, but the Broncos fired both after the 2021 season.
