Pat Shurmur explains his day-to-day role with Colorado
After 21 years in the NFL, former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is back at the collegiate level, this time with the Colorado Buffaloes. Shurmur accepted an offensive analyst role with Colorado under their newly hired head coach, Deion Sanders.
But what exactly does an analyst do, and what are the former NFL head coach’s responsibilities on a day-to-day basis? According to Shurmur, his responsibilities are more behind the scenes at Colorado than anything else.
“As you know, being an analyst, I work primarily behind the scenes. So I’m in the meeting room with the coaches,” said Shurmur. “I’m really not allowed to have one-on-ones with players. It’s really hard to be out there and bite your tongue when you see something. But if there is something that I see that might help a player, I gotta just track it through one of the coaches.
Shurmur will assist offensive coordinator Sean Lewis as an extra set of eyes and ears, ensuring that the Buffaloes offense is firing on all cylinders this season. For Colorado, the only way they can go is up following their abysmal 1-11 record last season.
Shurmur’s offensive expertise, albeit in an analyst position, could go a long way for the Buffaloes in 2023 as they attempt a complete 180 from a season ago and try to enter the conversation of being one of the better programs in college football.

Shurmur expresses confidence in Deion Sanders
Shurmur also revealed why he accepted the opportunity to team up with Sanders at Colorado.
“Well, I believe in Coach Prime; I believe in him as a man,” said Shurmur. “I remember him first certainly as a player. I was coaching in the league when he was playing. He’s one of the best players of all time in that game. I believe in his competitive spirit and when I was given an opportunity to come work with him. I jumped at it.”
Shurmer is a long-time coach with 32 years of skin in the game. However, this is not his first time at the collegiate level, as he spent his first 11 years coaching at Michigan State and a lone season at Stanford.
Over his 21-year NFL coaching career, Shurmur has had two head coaching stops with the Cleveland Browns 2011-2012 and the New York Giants 2018-2019. He has also been a part of eight playoff teams, six division titles and has a Super Bowl appearance to his name as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004.
